Around 190 million women worldwide suffer from endometriosis. The Endometriosis Association Germany estimates that two million women in Germany are affected. Endometriosis is a chronic disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, often on the ovaries, fallopian tubes or in the abdomen. This can cause severe pain, especially during menstruation, as well as infertility and other health problems. The disease often goes unrecognized for a long time and is difficult to diagnose.
The University Hospital of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, the University of Duisburg-Essen, the University of Münster, Hannover Medical School and the Endometriosis Association Germany are researching how the disease can be diagnosed more quickly and effectively and how new, personalized therapeutic approaches can be developed in the EndoFERT project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research with 3.39 million euros. Experts from Düsseldorf University Hospital will provide information about the disease in short presentations and look forward to subsequent discussions over coffee and pastries.
