The permanent exhibition of the German Museum of Books and Writing at the German National Library, "Signs - Books - Networks: from cuneiform to binary code", tells a brief media history of mankind along the three media innovations of writing, book printing and digital networks.
Whether notched wood, tattoo or anatomical textbook, whether neon sign or camouflage writing, gravestone, novel or love letter - for more than 5,000 years, people have been recording their knowledge of the world, their messages and fantasies with the help of written signs. Before the invention of writing, people passed on information orally from generation to generation. Writing, book printing and computers make it possible to store knowledge that can endure through the ages.
