She was an artist and early media star, and is still celebrated today as an icon of modern literature: Ingeborg Bachmann. Her work has repeatedly been overshadowed by personal tragedies, myths and attributions. Yet the author herself insisted on the strict separation of life and work. Bachmann expert Andrea Stoll is now setting the record straight: in her brilliantly written biography (Piper), she makes clear the force with which life has found its way into Bachmann's texts. Recently published letters and diaries show the spiral of self-dramatization and self-destruction and bring us closer to this exceptional poet than ever before.
