KIT - Kunst im Tunnel

Directly under Düsseldorf's Rhine promenade - in a space located between the tunnel tubes for motor traffic - KIT - Kunst im Tunnel (Art in the Tunnel), a spectacular meeting place for contemporary art, was opened in 2007. The visible entrance of KIT - a pavilion building on the promenade glazed to the Rhine - houses the KIT Café and is one of the most beautiful gastronomic addresses on the Rhine. When the sun is shining, the terrace with a view of the Rhine bend is a place to relax and enjoy.

Through the café, visitors reach the underground exhibition area via a large staircase or by elevator. This elliptically swings over a length of 140 meters parallel to the Rhine. The ceiling height and width of the space vary. Between the puristic concrete walls, the works of young artists are exhibited, whom the Artistic Director of KIT, Gertrud Peters, invites to exhibit here.

About four to six temporary exhibitions are shown each year. The focus of the program is on the presentation of young, contemporary art from the fields of sculpture, painting, photography, video and installation art. In addition, KIT sees it as its task to stimulate and promote exchange between international young artists. Mostly group exhibitions are presented, in rare cases also solo exhibitions. The mission of KIT - Art in the Tunnel is to promote the attitude of young artists acquired in the art academies and to provide support, acceptance and recognition through exhibitions and publications and to enable first experiences with institutional exhibiting.

Another major concern of KIT is the direct communication of exhibition contents in the form of workshops and guided tours. This is often done in direct cooperation with the young exhibiting artists.
