PULSE & Tilo Weber
Jazz | Contemporary Music
Drummers are usually impossible to miss. Tilo Weber, on the other hand, is quiet. And yet he has a presence like hardly any other drummer. Time and again, he opens doors to something new and refuses to be pigeonholed into a single style. He is just as open to chamber music as he is to free improvisation, electronic music, pop, hip-hop, or swing. Since 2023, he has been engaged in a close artistic collaboration with PULSE, a progressive ensemble that occasionally expands the classical string quartet lineup to include synthesizers and electronics, allowing musical ideas to flow freely across genre boundaries. Johannes Haase (violin), Susanne Zapf (violin), Yuko Hara (viola), and Jakob Nierenz (cello) commissioned three compositions from Tilo Weber, which they premiered together in December 2023 at the Sendesaal Bremen. The work “rainbows” was nominated for the German Jazz Prize in the composition category in 2025. As early as 2022, Tilo Weber won the German Jazz Prize for Arrangement of the Year. He combines open forms, pulsating Gnawa rhythms, and innovative playing techniques into a multifaceted whole. He expands his drumming with Indonesian gamelan timbres, allowing it to blend transparently with the sounds of the strings. In October 2026, the first joint album by this unusual ensemble will be released on the Boomslang Records label.
Note: The exhibition will be closed on this day prior to the event!
