Do you have a birthday on November 17, 18 or 19? Then celebrate with us! Birthday children receive Free admission to our 3rd Philharmonic Concert, and one accompanying person receives a 50% discount.
The occasion? On the one hand, we are celebrating our 200th season. On the other hand, we are dedicating our 3rd Philharmonic Concert to composers who are also celebrating anniversaries: The composer Charles Ives, whose 150th birthday is this year, was an absolutely exceptional figure in the American music world during his lifetime. By day he worked as an insurance salesman, by night he was a border crosser who completely rethought musical forms and tonality in the USA.
At the same time, a group of active avant-gardists in Europe were working on similar questions - but with completely different tonal results. One of them, Arnold Schönberg, was born in the same year as Charles Ives, 1874, exactly 150 years ago. In our 3rd Philharmonic Concert, however, you will encounter Schönberg not as an experimental composer, but as a sensitive arranger: Schönberg has arranged Johannes Brahms' Piano Quartet in G minor op. 25 for large orchestra - as if made for the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra!
Also on the program: Béla Bartók's music for string instruments, percussion and celesta. It also became world-famous due to its use as film music in Stanley Kubrik's film Shining. The Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted at this concert by General Music Director Marko Letonja.
Program:
Charles Ives (1874-1954): Two Contemplations: The Unanswered Question & Central Park in the Dark
Béla Bartók (1881-1945): Music for string instruments, percussion and celesta
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897): Piano Quartet in G minor op. 25 (set for large orchestra by Arnold Schönberg)
