CEM A. Double Bind

In the organizer's words:

The Berlin-based artist Cem A. - founder of the meme page @freeze_magazine - has become internationally known for his works on virality and performativity, which have been presented at documenta fifteen, Mudam Luxembourg and the Barbican Centre, among others. In DOUBLE BIND, his latest performative discourse format, he makes the mechanisms of cognitive dissonance visible with the help of performance, anthropological research and data-based visualization. Two experts from different disciplines take it in turns to speak on one topic - for example, a firefighter and a banker on the subject of risk - without being able to hear each other. While the audience follows them, their speech and lines of thought are transcribed and analyzed in real time. The live visualization shows where terms overlap or meanings drift apart. The result is not a dialog, but a juxtaposition of knowledge systems that reveals how different backgrounds not only describe the world, but also create it. In the MARKK Museum am Rothenbaum - Cultures and Arts of the World, a discursive space unfolds in which difference is not dissolved, but becomes legible.
