Liam Shortall alias corto.alto is no longer an unknown quantity - and yet everything about him sounds like a new departure. The Scottish composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist not only made it onto the Mercury Prize shortlist with his debut album Bad With Names, but also won several prizes. It is hardly surprising that he is now signed to the legendary Ninja Tune label. His sound? A wild cross between jazz, club culture, hip-hop, soul and funk that refuses to be pigeonholed. Music that breathes, grooves, explodes. And it has a completely different effect live anyway: over 120 shows in a year and a half, from Glastonbury to Montreux, always sold-out clubs, always a great atmosphere. Anyone who thinks "jazz" for a moment and clicks on is missing out. You really are.
