In the organizer's words:
The memorial was erected in 1909 in memory of four colonial soldiers from Düsseldorf who died during the suppression of the Herero and Nama resistance against German colonial rule. The genocide in what is now Namibia cost the lives of up to 100,000 people between 1904 and 1908 and was only recognized as genocide by the German government in 2021. In 1935, the National Socialists rededicated the monument as a general tribute to "German colonial heroes" and moved it to Frankenplatz.
The memorial will be presented as a place of remembrance of Düsseldorf's colonial history through a picture presentation and the discussion about a redesign of the memorial will be introduced.
