A Memorial to Düsseldorf’s Colonial History

The monument was erected in 1909 to commemorate four colonial soldiers from Düsseldorf who died while suppressing the Herero and Nama resistance against German colonial rule. The genocide in what is now Namibia claimed the lives of up to 100,000 people between 1904 and 1908 and was not recognized as genocide by the German federal government until 2021. In 1935, the Nazis redesignated the monument and relocated it to Frankenplatz. The monument will be presented in a slide lecture as a site of remembrance for Düsseldorf’s colonial history and will be introduced into the discussion regarding its redesign.
