Musical improvisational theater as part of the exhibition "Wilhelm Lehmbruck. Eternally human" with the student improv theater group of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg "Händels Harlekine"
With their improv theater scenes about Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Händel's Harlequins take on the challenge of portraying life stories in times of war and, in doing so, draw a line to the present day with its uncertainties and fears. An important starting point lies in the artist himself, in Lehmbruck's brilliant versatility, who repeatedly sought encounters with the other arts in his life, with poets, writers and theater artists. His own violin playing was also part of his versatile artistic personality. Handel's harlequins refer to this versatility with their scenes, improvised music and singing. Their central question is to what extent people can use art to fight against darkness and pain in order to find vital solace and hope.
Ultimately, however, it will also be up to the audience on this evening to decide which aspects of Lehmbruck's life as an artist will take center stage and where this journey through time will take us.
An event as part of the Halle 2026 cultural theme year "City. Light. Life. Energy".
HÄNDEL'S HARLEQUINS
Händel's Harlequins is a student improv theater group at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg made up of student teachers of music. Founded by director Uta Lesch in 2013, the group combines traditional improvisational theater with various musical forms of vocal improvisation. For example, they improvise in the genre of art song, pop song or musical theater and then combine these formats with spoken scenes to create improv shows. Entire improvised musicals or opera scenes can also be created according to the audience's instructions. Traditional improv games and long forms of improvisational theater are also performed. The shows thrive on the participation of the audience, which encourages, gives ideas and sometimes also determines the course of the action. Handel's Harlequins have already put on more than 130 shows over the past 13 years. Outside their home stage, the studio stage in the Händelhauskarree Halle, the group regularly performs in the Händelhaus and at the Handel Festival as well as in small theaters, churches and schools in central Germany.
