Die (fast) totale Sonnenfinsternis am 12. August 2026

The next solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, will be the second-to-last total eclipse visible in Europe for decades to come. Although it will appear as only a partial eclipse over Heidelberg, the Moon will cover nearly 90% of the Sun. This is therefore a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the foreseeable future to experience this cosmic event on such a scale right here.

In his lecture, Dr. Markus Nielbock will explain the fundamental processes that lead to eclipses; he will also describe the specific celestial alignments involved in the upcoming solar eclipse and provide practical tips for observing it. In the past, eclipses were not merely celestial phenomena; they also influenced cultures, historical events, and revolutionary scientific discoveries. These topics will also be addressed in the lecture.
