Bastian Balthasar Bux flees from his teasing classmates into Mr. Karl Konrad Koreander’s antique bookstore. The strange Mr. Koreander is reading an even stranger book: “The Neverending Story.” Bastian is magically drawn to it—he can’t help himself; he has to steal the book. Breathless, he hides with it and begins to read: about the boundless realm of Phantásien, which is threatened by Nothingness; about the Childlike Empress, who is terminally ill; about the heroic Atréju; and about Auryn, the symbol of power and wisdom. “Do what you will” is written on it. And Bastian trembles: Could this be meant for him? Is he the human child who is allowed to do whatever he wants? When the Childlike Empress calls to him with her last ounce of strength, Bastian summons all his courage and dares to make the leap into Phantásien. He gives her the name Moonchild and receives Auryn from her. But Bastian realizes almost too late what his true mission is: to find the wish that can lead him out of Phantásien again. But how does one leave a realm that has no borders?
