If an actor or reality show host can become president and wreak havoc in the world, then musicians have an honorable duty to respond and stand up for the common people. Punk rock legends D.O.A. have set out to do just that. That's why the new D.O.A. album is here: Treason. Joey "Shithead" Keithley, Canada's godfather of punk, was increasingly frustrated by the disturbing news from world capitals such as Washington, Moscow, Beijing, Tehran and Pyongyang. He decided to take a stand against corruption, warmongering, racism, sexism and climate change with D.O.A.'s musical response. The result is Treason, the band's eighteenth album. It begins with the energetic track "All The President's Men" - "It's time to lock them up". This is followed by the modern punk anthem "Wait Till Tomorrow", which addresses the brutal treatment of refugees. However, D.O.A. never lose their typical punk humour, as the song "It Was D.O.A." shows - a self-deprecating reckoning with the hard lessons of touring life. Of course, an album called Treason cannot be without a commentary on President Donald Trump. The "Men of Action", Joey and his rhythm section Paddy Duddy (drums) and Mike "Corkscrew" Hodsall (bass), have reinterpreted one of their classics. Fucked Up Ronnie" has become "Fucked Up Donald" - 73 seconds of pure punk rage! Treason gives the corrupt system the middle finger with songs like "Gonna Set You Straight", "Just Got Back From The USA" and the title track "It's Treason". There's also a powerful version of Neil Young's "Hey Hey, My My" that conveys pain and fire at the same time. With Treason, D.O.A. don't mince their words - exactly how punk should be: an uncontrollable riot that seems to breathe fire. D.O.A. was founded in 1978 by Joey "Shithead" Keithley in Vancouver. Early on, Keithley realized that there were no record deals in sight, so he founded the label Sudden Death Records and released the first EP Disco Sucks, which quickly became an underground hit. In 1980, Keithley coined the term "hardcore", and the album Hardcore 81 became the milestone that launched the hardcore movement. Over the past four decades, D.O.A. have released 18 studio albums, sold over a million records and played more than 4,500 shows on five continents. The band has influenced generations of musicians, including Guns N' Roses, Green Day, Nirvana, Offspring, Henry Rollins, Dave Grohl and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Joey Keithley has also written two books: I Shithead: A Life in Punk and Talk - Action = 0. Since day one, D.O.A. has organized hundreds of benefit concerts and protests for good and just causes, including environmental issues, women's rights, food bank support, First Nations rights and opposition to war, racism and weapons proliferation. Keithley has been called a "cultural politician" trying to change the world from outside the system. However, in October 2018, he was elected as a councillor in his hometown of Burnaby, ran for the Green Party and is now changing the system from the inside. He advocates for affordable housing and help for the disadvantaged. Many compare Joe to a modern-day Woody Guthrie, and like his idols Woody and Pete Seeger, he and the band never give up. When D.O.A. bring their wild, untamed live show on tour, it's an absolute must-see - one of the last true punk rock bands still on stage, kicking ass and telling the truth. It's always a chaotic, almost out-of-control experience, but somehow D.O.A. manage to pull it all back together in the nick of time. And in some indescribable way, you're never quite the same afterwards. Hardcore 81 was awarded the 2019 CBC Polaris Prize as one of the greatest Canadian albums of all time.
