Fr, 9.10.2026, 19.30 Uhr Walzer für Nichttänzer. Erzählkonzert im Dreivierteltakt mit Martin Brödemann (Klavier) und Thomas Eicher (Text)
In the organizer's words:
How many "Kings of the Waltz" are there? Was the "Danube Waltz" first sung or danced? Did you know that the Viennese waltz was made socially acceptable by a Spaniard, of all people, and was banned at the Tsar’s court just a few years later? That the authorities around 1800 considered it subversive, while the nationalistic Germans of later times elevated it to a cultural treasure worthy of protection? There is much to tell about the waltz—both historical facts and anecdotes. Above all, however, this evening’s musical program showcases the versatility of waltz music.
In this narrated concert, Martin Brödemann and Thomas Eicher present a musical panorama of the waltz, rich in cultural and historical facets, spanning the 18th to the 21st centuries, from New York, London, and Vienna, Paris, and St. Petersburg; between serious and light music; and between dance and concert waltzes by Schubert, Brahms, Chopin, Puccini, Shostakovich, Stolz, Strauss, Lehár, and many others—featuring virtuosic pieces and well-known melodies from various styles and eras.
Martin Brödemann works as a freelance pianist and organist in Hagen and as a piano instructor at the School of Music at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. He studied piano at the Cologne University of Music, Wuppertal campus. As a soloist, accompanist, and composer, this versatile musician has participated in numerous events.
Thomas Eicher lives in Dortmund. He works as a cultural manager, author, host, and reciter. Since 2004, he has been the executive director of Melange e.V. A doctor of literary studies, he has published short stories, scholarly books, and anthologies, and has conceived various stage productions.
