trio in feral is a Cologne-based ensemble for experimental electronic improvisation. The three members - Harald Muenz, Benjamin Grau and Alexis Ludwig - are united by an exploratory approach to improvisation as a form of compositional real-time practice.
Harald Muenz, who holds a doctorate in composition, works with a deliberately minimal, highly differentiated iPad setup. His work is characterized by interdisciplinary artistic research at the interface of language, music and performance, visual and digital mediality.
Benjamin Grau moved from rap to pop music production to a concert degree in electronic composition. He develops hybrid setups with customized hardware and software to combine controlled sonic complexity with improvisational openness in the area between popular music and experimental concert formats.
As a self-taught instrument maker and experienced performer from the DIY and noise scene, Alexis Ludwig brings analog machines and non-linear sound generators into play, whose unpredictable behavior becomes the central motor of his music.
The work of trio in feral ("in the wilderness") focuses not only on the search for a homogeneous ensemble sound but also on the productive rubbing against difference: three individual sound languages in the field of tension between convergence and contradiction. Improvisation here becomes a method of artistic research, as an ongoing investigation of musical communication, the development of form and tonal autonomy.
