Ghislain Leroy is the director of the Conservatoire in Amiens and the organist at Lille Cathedral—home to the first French concert hall organ, which was installed in Lille in 2007. Leroy’s career began when he won the City of Paris Organ Competition at the age of 22, and has taken him throughout Europe and Asia, including a full year in Sapporo. His program begins with Mozart’s highly virtuosic Fantasy in F minor, for whose delicate double trills four hands would be better than two. With works by Franck and Guilmant, French symphonic music in its purest form comes to life. This tradition resonates in Alain’s playing, yet the composer—who died in the war—was above all an explorer of wondrous sound effects and playing techniques.
