The city of Cologne's culture of remembrance when it comes to Karl Marx leaves a lot to be desired. Yet the philosopher worked here twice in the 1840s as editor of a left-liberal, later left-radical newspaper: the (Neue) Rheinische Zeitung. Together with Friedrich Engels, he believed that Cologne was the right city in Germany to start a revolution. We start our Marx tour at the Alter Markt, where there are several historical points of reference. On our way through the city center, we pass Marx's former homes as well as his first print shop and the place where the two authors of the Communist Manifesto once met.
