A child lives with her mother in a small town in Switzerland. The mother has no husband, but many men. There is no money, just as there is no love for her son. As a woman with no education and no prospects, but with an insatiable desire for freedom, her only option is the weapon of the powerless: The bad mouth. And the son? He has to practise the art of surviving his mother from an early age. Following his acclaimed autobiographical text "Father's Box", Swiss Büchner Prize winner Lukas Bärfuss turns to the life of his mother (Rowohlt). He writes with painful clarity about the hardship, but also about the strength of the child. And he asks the crucial question: where in this life does personal responsibility end and that of an entire society begin?
