MADELEINES - In Search of the Lost Sixteenth Note
Music by Muneer B. Fennell, Doug Hammond, Steve Coleman, and others

Muneer B. Fennell (formerly Muneer A. Fataah) was Carl Ludwig Hübsch’s first and only jazz and improvisation teacher in Freiburg in the early 1980s.
Before emigrating to Europe, Fennell had played cello in New York alongside
drummer Doug Hammond and Steve Coleman in a legendary trio
—even before Steve Coleman and the term “M-Base”
.
Both Fennell and Doug Hammond represent a style of music that stems from the African-American
tradition, but whose protagonists remained on the fringes because their approach
was so distinctive and because they were a generation older than the leading figures of the M-Base
.
The Madeleines are dedicated to their music; their band name is borrowed from Marcel Proust’s *In Search of
In Search of Lost Time. The Madeleines bridge the gap from the pre-M-Base
era to today’s European improvisational music, from the African-American-influenced
to Europe’s “real-time jazz.”
A unique approach to rhythm, combined with a different conception of
improvisation. The complexity of rhythmic overlays meets the simplicity
of clear motifs and polyphonic lines. All instruments are rhythm
instruments. Improvisation over melody, melodies as tracks, as in a drum circle.
A drum ensemble with a drummer. Harmolodics in its infancy. Afro-Cuban elements,
served up in an unconventional way. The interplay between Leonhard Huhn, Carl Ludwig Hübsch, and Thomas Sauerborn gives wings to memories.
