NICA live: Jorik Bergman - Simple Songs

Dutch flutist and composer Jorik Bergman presents simple songs designed to help with difficult problems. For this ambitious project, she has invited Belgian trombonist Nabou Claerhout, Australian bassist Sam Anning, and German drummer Leif Berger. Together, they aim to explore simplicity and find peace in simplicity—perhaps even solace for the soul.

Bergman’s understanding of the terms “simple” and “songs” is multifaceted: this evening will unfold a broad musical spectrum, ranging from jazz standards to original compositions and atonal melodies. Even though the performers will repeatedly find themselves improvising throughout the evening, the musicians consciously strive for simplicity and free themselves from egotism and the very complexity that runs counter to the idea of “Simple Songs.” Will they succeed? The evening will tell.
