5:15 p.m. Concert introduction
In her program, guitarist Mariia Smirnova combines poetic soundscapes, virtuosic elegance, and narrative imagination into a musical journey through eras and cultures. From Heitor Villa-Lobos’ atmospheric *Prélude* to Napoléon Coste’s subtle character miniature and Ponce’s dance-like ballet, the guitar unfolds as a richly colorful solo instrument, ranging from intimacy to brilliant expressiveness.
The dramatic highlight is Johann Sebastian Bach’s famous Partita in D minor with its iconic Chaconne—a monument of music history that opens up new perspectives on the guitar.
Mariia Smirnova, a prize winner at international competitions and most recently honored with the Colonia Music Prize, captivates audiences with her technical mastery, charming stage presence, and joy of musical discovery.
