Monk’s Mood - WDR Big Band plays Thelonious Monk
In the organizer's words:
"There are no wrong notes on the piano." —With this unconventional attitude, Thelonious Monk shaped an uncompromising piano style full of rough edges and wrote pieces such as “’Round Midnight,” “Straight, No Chaser,” and “Blue Monk”—rhythmically complex masterpieces of lyrical depth. Born in 1917 in North Carolina and raised in New York, Monk, as a pianist and composer, had a decisive influence on the development of bebop; his flamboyant demeanor and lively stage presence earned him the honorary title “High Priest of Bop.”
Under the direction of Jörg Achim Keller, the WDR Big Band pays tribute to the brilliant work of Thelonious Monk, bringing his distinctive style to life through the sound of a jazz orchestra.
