FILM 1:
One millimeter above the edge of the world
A film by Justus Boehncke
Germany 1980 (rbb/SFB), 45 minutes
The people who dare to flee across the open sea under the new communist regime in Vietnam drift towards an uncertain fate in their small boats; the rescue ship Cap Anamur saves them from certain death. The film from 1980 follows everyday life on the Cap Anamur - from the helicopter search for the 'boat people' to the rescue and care of the sick and exhausted. Initial conversations shed light on the different motives for fleeing. Life on board is characterized by waiting and hoping. As life gradually 'normalizes', the camera is increasingly able to capture cheerful faces, especially those of the children. For the crew, the work on the Cap Anamur is deeply satisfying.
FILM 2:
Mission: Saving people
A film by Julia Horn
Germany 2015 (WDR), 45 minutes
Together with friends, Rupert Neudeck charters the freighter 'Cap Anamur' without having a clue about seafaring. On August 13, 1979, he sets sail and saves the lives of 11,400 Vietnamese refugees from the South China Sea. The decision to act and help changed and shaped Rupert Neudeck's life. The film tells the story of how Rupert Neudeck's decision to act became a worldwide aid organization - with helpers in crisis areas where state development aid often cannot take place for political reasons. But it is also the story of Trang, who owes her life to Rupert Neudeck and 'Cap Anamur'. Rescuers and rescued never lost sight of each other.
Followed by a discussion with: Bernd Göken (GF Cap Anamur).
