Open Air: AMRUM

Amrum, 1945. Shortly before the end of the war, Hille (Laura Tonke), a mother of three, still firmly believes in ultimate victory. Life on Amrum at that time is anything but easy. Her twelve-year-old son, Nanning (Jasper Billerbeck), toils every day alongside his best friend, Hermann (Kian Köppke), in the fields of farmer Tessa (Diane Kruger), while above their heads, Allied bombers fly toward the German mainland to finally bring the enemy to its knees. Anyone who wants to survive and provide for their family has to roll up their sleeves—and that’s exactly what Nanning does: At night, under the bright moonlight, he collects driftwood, hunts rabbits in the dunes, and steals eggs from wild geese. But in the village, he remains an outsider. As a “newcomer” from the big city, he is met with suspicion, and at school he is mocked. Moreover, his heavily pregnant mother remains loyal to the Führer with unwavering devotion, even when everyone else has long since realized that there is nothing left to win.

When the war finally comes to an end and news of Hitler’s death reaches the island via the radio, Hille goes into labor. Shortly after the birth of her fourth child, she sinks into deep sadness and refuses to eat anything. When she expresses a strong desire for white bread with butter and honey, Nanning finds new hope. He is certain that his mother can only regain her strength if he fulfills this wish for her. But where to get it, when you can’t even steal it anywhere on the entire island? Bartering, day-long treks through the mudflats, seal hunting—nothing is too much for him. As he gathers ingredient after ingredient, Nanning is confronted not only with the harsh reality of war but also with a family secret that will change his life forever.
