Reframing Wilhelm: Die Dekonstruktion eines Denkmals

With the Reframing Wilhelm project, the Frameorial collective wants to inject a breath of fresh air into the debate about the monument to Kaiser Wilhelm II on the Hohenzollern Bridge in Cologne, to involve more people in the discourse again, and to sensitize the general public to the debate. The decision about the fate of the equestrian statue should not only be made by a few insiders. The public space belongs to all of us!

As the project name suggests, we want to put the monument in a new context. We want to draw attention to remnants from times long past that still shape our public space. We want to raise questions about whether they are still relevant and appropriate, whether they reflect our values today. Our goal is neither to banish nor to destroy the monument.

From November 09-12, an exhibition will take place at &wieder in Cologne Nippes to conclude the Reframing Wilhelm project.

All results of the workshops, the action days at the monument and the ideas competition will be shown.

Frameorial is a collective from NRW of people from the fields of history, art and culture. Nothing is more invisible in the cityscape than old monuments. That's why on our blog and Instagram channel we tell stories about monuments all over the world and how they are reframed, i.e. re-contextualized or differently contextualized. We want to make stories visible in public space and show that not everything that is, has to stay that way. Because only when we become aware of the past, we can change the future!
