Slata Roschal: Es ist die Leichtigkeit, die den Herrn am Tisch von der Putzfrau unterscheidet
In the organizer's words:
Where Wellness Meets Work. A Novel About Capitalism and Decadence
Lea Stein travels to the Hotel Schillerhof Resort & Spa for a job interview—her last chance at a fresh start. The young mother hopes to land a job with literary agent Erwin Groß. While Lea navigates the world of the wealthy—uncertain, observant, calculating—migrant women clean the rooms and keep up the luxurious facade. Erwin Groß sleeps poorly, despite his success, and is looking for someone to handle the unpleasant tasks—inexpensively, of course.
When an author is found dead in his room, everything changes: Who is allowed to stay? Who has to leave? And who will remove the blood from the carpet?
Slata Roschal recounts with razor-sharp precision the class distinctions that manifest themselves in tips, ironed napkins, and seating arrangements. A novel about people who serve and people who are served—laconic, darkly comic, and disturbingly relevant.
Slata Roschal, born in 1992 in Saint Petersburg, earned her Ph.D. in literary studies from LMU Munich. She has received numerous fellowships and awards for her literary work, including the Bücherfrauen Literature Prize and the Free State of Bavaria’s Art Promotion Prize. Her debut novel, *153 Forms of Non-Existence*, was nominated for the German Book Prize in 2022. Her second novel, *I’d Like to Drink Wine and Wait for the End of the World*, was published in 2024.
