SMILE AND BURN is known for its wild live shows, a humorous online presence, a clear political stance, and a sound that pushes boundaries. On their seventh studio album, “Seid ihr stolz auf mich?” (Are You Proud of Me?), they’ve almost completely reshuffled the deck. A new sense of seriousness and gravity has taken hold, and the tongue-in-cheek gallows humor that usually ran through their lyrics has given way to introspective self-reflection. The band explores the emotionally charged concept of “pride” on a personal level, releasing what is arguably the most thematically dense work in their discography. More experimentation with sound, a more airy song structure, uncompromisingly melancholic lyrics—and above all, no repetition: The punk rock that SMILE AND BURN play on their 12-track album is rawer and more stripped-down than what we’ve come to expect from the band. The sound of “Are You Proud of Me?” conveys and complements the contemplative, somber mood of the lyrics. More post-punk than pogo—and yet absolutely perfect for live performances.
