Five sisters are fed up with their religious parents and the conservative suburban life of the 1970s. When one of them takes her own life, the others are no longer allowed to leave the house. Boys from their school want to free them.
Coppola's feature film debut is a melancholy cinematic highlight of the 90s. With an atmospheric soundtrack by Air and dreamlike camera images, the film moves stylishly between humor and gloom.
The film is based on the novel of the same name by Jeffrey Eugenides, which was recommended to Coppola by his friend and Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore.
In addition to the soundtrack, the French band Air also released the album "The Virgin Suicides", on which parts of the movie's dialogue were adapted into their own "Teenage Tragedy Songs".
Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA, the soundtrack received a Grammy nomination.
