Doppelkonzert: Evan Parker & Peter Evans / Zimmermann & Lienhard (KROM x CJW)

Although the British Evan Parker, born in 1944, and the American trumpeter Peter Evans, born in 1981, are a generation apart in age, they are similar in their approach to improvised music and their use of extended playing techniques. The saxophonist Parker was one of the first improvisation artists in Europe to integrate solo concerts into his work, for which he played soprano saxophone exclusively. Like his younger colleague Evans on the trumpet, Parker relies on auditory streaming, in which an instrumental part is perceived as two or more melodies. And like Evans, Parker also creates this phenomenon through the use of multiphonics, circular breathing and split sounds. And anyone who knows the Brit and the American knows that when they come together for a duo performance, they by no means degrade their improvisational music to technical cabinet pieces. Rather, they will use their entire fund of technical achievements to reveal their very own melos to the audience.

Fabian Dudek, Victor Fox, Felix Hauptmann, Kirke Karja, Roger Kintopf, Julia Sanjurjo and Tizia Zimmermann know each other well; each of them has often played in one of the other's bands. But the fact that these seven musicians from Cologne, Tallinn and Zurich were asked to play a concert at Cologne Jazzweek with one of their projects at almost the same time was a coincidence. So why not come together for a collective? No sooner said than done: their collective KROM celebrates its debut at Cologne Jazzweek 2026. Zurich accordionist Zimmerman has been working with her Berlin-based compatriot, electric musician Pablo Lienhard, since 2018. They play music that has found a home in the deepest basses, draws its strength from powerful drones and relies on long, trance-like drone tones. The sounds of their instruments intertwine so closely that the boundaries between acoustic and electronic sounds seem to be dissolved and everything merges into an energetic whole.
