The musical legacy of drummer Paul Motian (1931-2011) is still important today. Motian redefined the role of the drums - from the legendary trio of pianist Bill Evans to his time with Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea and Lee Konitz to his work as the leader of his own bands. For him, the drums were a melodic instrument, he used pauses as dramaturgical elements and was able to play across metric boundaries as a matter of course. The Cologne-based Argentinian singer Julia Sanjuro, one of seven musicians from four countries in the young collective KROM, has found her own "The Paul Motian Songbook" because she is aware of the vocal quality that was inherent in the drummer's work throughout his life. She wrote appropriate lyrics for some of his compositions, found the right harmonic and melodic accompaniment with pianist Aaron Parks, among others, and is launching her "Paul Motian Songbook" with this concert at Cologne Jazzweek.

KROM is characterized by a human and musical trust that has grown over the years, because the seven collectivists from four countries are both bandleaders and side(wo)men in the projects. Permeability is not accidental with them. Rather, it is about inspiring and challenging each other. The KROMist:innen are Fabian Dudek (saxophone), Victor Fox (saxophone), Felix Hauptmann (piano), Kirke Karja (piano), Roger Kintopf (bass), Julia Sanjurjo (vocals) and Tizia Zimmermann (accordion). Victor Fox plays tenor saxophone. He acquired his alias name Big Breezy when he practiced circular breathing non-stop. This became Big Breathing, later Big Breezy. With this name, he can take on any role that suits him. With the Toxic Twinz aka Fabian Dudek (midi saxophone) and Alex Parzhuber (electronics), he now presents purely digital-electronic music. The three don't know any boundaries. They are all about trying things out and experimenting, the music can be loud, fast, beautiful, shrill or quiet, sometimes it can be everything at the same time.
