“Maro’s Photo”

In the early 2000s, Maria Nikolaidou takes a photo at the Panzerwiese in Munich: Two little boys are playing war. An angel wraps his arms protectively around them. What we don’t see at first glance: the angel is pregnant. On a hill in the background stands a person who appears to be watching the scene. Twenty-three years later, her son Alexandros uses the same camera his mother used back then to make a film about this photo. Through conversations with his mother and the people in the photo, he returns to the location where the photo was taken and attempts to reconstruct the stories behind the image.

Having grown up with her nonverbal brother with a disability, Jinhyun navigates a world of affection and distance marked by shame. Her journey takes her through institutions and traces the contours of exclusion. The camera remains on the threshold, gathering traces of control. Trains connect these fragments and travel into the night—to a place where language dissolves and what remains is not spoken, but felt.
