“For My Sake” is a conversation about dying between my grandmother Helga and me. Helga has cancer. This will likely be her last year. I’m visiting her more often now and bringing my camera along. As we do, we ask ourselves: How can dying be a harmonious experience? An inner conflict accompanies us: On the one hand, Helga wishes to pass away peacefully and accept death. But there’s also the instinct for self-preservation. Can that really be turned off when the moment comes? And there’s still time until then, isn’t there? The film captures snapshots of letting go and saying goodbye—between the living room and the nursing home, final steps, poems, and breaths.
