In her debut film *Fwends* (AUS 2025, 92 min.), Sophie Somerville follows Em as she visits her best friend in Melbourne. The two twenty-somethings are both lost in their own ways: Em, because her supposed dream job is marked by an exploitative and misogynistic environment; Jessie, because a void has opened up in her life following a breakup.

Winner of the Caligari Film Prize at the 2025 Berlinale. Excerpt from the jury’s statement: 
“Listening to others and seeking to understand what moves them is by no means a given anymore. We therefore chose a film that underscores how important it is to listen and to have the courage to open up and admit one’s own weaknesses. A film that sparkles with humor and lightness. This feature-length debut focuses on cheerful, fulfilling moments without escapism, on solidarity without negative undertones, and on trust without fear of taking risks. Against the backdrop of restrictive production conditions—which he playfully and creatively navigates by relying on collaborative working methods—the film shifts between serious conversations and silly self-forgetfulness, and between precise acting and documentary-style freedom."
