Jazz at Green Room: Cliff Schmitt’s Deep in the Reeds

Deep in the Reeds is a new band founded by American bassist Cliff Schmitt. Inspired by modern jazz as well as Astor Piazzolla, Guy Klucevsek, Brazilian choro, and Cajun-zydeco music, they aim to bring a fresh blend to the German improvisational music scene. Deep in the Reeds is a play on the English expression “deep in the weeds,” which means “to get so caught up in details that you lose sight of the big picture.” Anyone who’s ever been to the immigration office in Duisburg understands this. Deep in the Reeds does the opposite: We keep the big picture in mind, and that big picture consists of lyricism and rhythmic intensity.
