Pedestrian Flow Simulations – Applications in Crowd Management and Current Developments

What is this about?

The design of pedestrian facilities and the coordination of processes in high-traffic areas are crucial for efficiency, comfort, and safety. Pedestrian flow simulations make it possible to analyze the temporal and spatial behavior of crowds and identify potential bottlenecks as early as the planning phase. The CroMa-PRO research project investigated how simulation tools can be integrated into the planning of major events. Use cases included, among others, UEFA EURO 2024 and the 2025 Ed Sheeran concerts in Düsseldorf. In addition, current developments and research questions in the field of pedestrian dynamics are presented.

Where do we stand today?

Pedestrian flow simulations are already an established tool for analyzing evacuation and usage scenarios and can highlight potential bottlenecks at an early stage. To date, the modeling of pedestrian movements has been based primarily on physical approaches.

What’s new?

The CroMa-PRO research project is investigating how event scenarios can be translated into simulation scenarios and how the results can be integrated into event planning. The project considers not only pedestrian flows but also traffic flows—and thus the “last mile” of events. Current research at IAS-7 also demonstrates how pedestrian dynamics models can be further developed in the future—from physical models to social agent-based models.
