In the organizer's words:
Sounds of Memory
Ravel, Schoenberg, Messiaen—they reflect on the defining moments of their era and arrive at musical expressions that could hardly be more different: Ravel composes a Baroque “Tombeau”—a memorial piece for friends who fell in World War I. Schönberg’s *Melodram* offers a glimpse into the traumatic depths of the Shoah, and Messiaen, during the German occupation of France, composes a radical spiritual counterworld in which divine presence reigns in place of violence.
