In a summery estate landscape in the Polish provinces between the wars, a man returns to the place of his youth after many years. Wiktor, now an engineer and driven by a feeling of inner emptiness, visits the Wilko estate, where he once spent formative weeks and got to know the estate owner's six daughters. His renewed encounters with the now grown-up women confront him with memories, missed opportunities and the question of how much past decisions determine his present life. Each of them reflects a different concept of closeness, adaptation or self-assertion, without it being possible to simply repeat the past.

Andrzej Wajda follows Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz's literary model and develops it into a quiet, precisely observed drama about time, memory and inner maturation. A melancholy panorama unfolds in calm images and restrained dialog, in which landscape and architecture become carriers of memory. The film gains its intensity from the subtle shifting of gazes, gestures and unspoken expectations - a reflection on farewell, transience and the burden of what has been.
