Sinem channels the spirit of the She-Punks and moves across the stage with lizard-like determination, as if her name were Iggy Türkpop. And this determination isn’t just evident in every movement—it’s also in her singing. Anyone who’s known Sinem for a while can’t help but feel that her life up to now has been lived so that exactly what’s now coursing through our veins could happen: music! And as is often the case with determination—it remains a mystery for the longest time. Until recently, Sinem wasn’t a band at all, but rather something of an organizational asset behind the scenes of Munich’s underground scene. It also hasn’t been all that long since the children of the people who came to Germany to work back then began naturally blending their at least two identities. They are “divided between two worlds,” as Ozan Ata Canani observes in his song of the century, “Deutsche Freunde.”
