What's happening in Cologne is sometimes fast! At least that's how it used to be. The grocer Cornelius Stüssgen opened his first store in Ehrenfeld in 1897 and had over 100 branches, so-called service stores, before the start of the First World War in 1914. He is regarded as the Cologne mastermind behind the German supermarkets and was a master of packaging and packing. He built his central warehouse in Stolberger Straße with its own railway siding in 1927 in a record time of seven months. His warehouse included a butcher's shop, coffee roasting plant and a wine cellar 13 meters below ground. He had his employees race through the warehouse on roller skates. "Time is money" and writing to every merchant was ruinous, was his motto. Right from the start, Stüssgen advertised with the Freshness Seal, because quality was more important than the knockdown price.
He had machines made for packaging and labeling. His rationalization of sales and packaging was groundbreaking for the German retail trade. In 1952, the first self-service stores were opened in the Rhineland.
We start our cycle tour in the Cologne wine cellar, where the best wines have been stored and sold since 1927. The "treasure chamber" was designed by Cologne artist Ewald Mataré. After the wine cellar in Ehrenfeld, we go in search of clues to the southern part of the city.
