Vortrag: "Vor 600 Jahren: Von der Synagoge zur Ratskapelle. Mit Dr. Tanja Potthoff
In the organizer's words:
After the Jewish community was expelled in 1424, the city council of Cologne converted the former synagogue into its town hall chapel in a symbolic act. The consecration took place on September 8, 1426, for which Stefan Lochner created the world-famous "Altar of the City Patrons". This can now be found in Cologne Cathedral. Only a few Cologne residents know this today: The chapel was destroyed during the Second World War.
The lecture explains the partly anti-Jewish background to this conversion, explains why the council needed a chapel in the first place and what we know about the architecture and furnishings.
