Watch This Space: Andrew Staples x BRSO

It’s not an opera. Nor is it a recital. Perhaps it’s more like a kind of séance.

At least, that’s how tenor Andrew Staples and BRSO harpist Magdalena Hoffmann envision this extraordinary “Watch This Space” evening, which they’ve given the working title “Orpheus in the World of Art Songs.” Fourteen songs by Robert Schumann and Benjamin Britten will not only be performed here—they will be woven together into an emotional, audiovisual map of the myth. With singing and harp music, but also with poems read by Rainer Maria Rilke, as well as pen-and-ink drawings created by the artists specifically for this evening, accompanied by lighting and sound design that underscore and frame what is heard. Creating an atmospheric space that could be Orpheus’ underworld—or perhaps even more.
