In the organizer's words:

BRSO Chief Conductor Sir Simon Rattle opens the season with Ludwig van Beethoven’s joyful Ninth Symphony, offering a first glimpse of the upcoming Beethoven Year 2027. For him, this symphony is the first—and perhaps the only one—that moves from immense heaviness and darkness to transcendental lightness, “as if it had taken a gigantic leap forward in time to Bruckner’s own Ninth and traveled into the idealistic world of the Enlightenment depicted in Mozart’sMagic Flute.” Rattle precedes this Ninth with Johann Sebastian Bach’s solemn cantata*O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort*, performed on period instruments. For Beethoven’s Ninth, the BRSO then switches to modern instruments; the magnificent soloists are equally at home in both worlds.

The concert on September 24, 2026, will be a benefit concert in support of the Lichtblick Foundation for Child and Youth Welfare.
