In the organizer's words:

“The Psalms are poems of praise, but also of anger and judgment, even of curses,” wrote Igor Stravinsky about hisSymphony of Psalms. It was composed during a time of personal tragedy. Tuberculosis had struck the composer’s family; his wife and eldest daughter fell ill and ultimately died from the disease. “It is not a work that offers simple comfort, and the God portrayed can be stern, even cruel,” says Sir Simon Rattle. At the same time, moments of otherworldly tranquility and beauty permeate the symphony. It is framed by the somber*Chant funèbre*, the otherworldly five-minute piece*Le roi des étoiles*(which Debussy deemed performable only on “Sirius and Aldebaran”), and the scandalous classic*Le sacre du printemps*. An evening devoted entirely to Stravinsky, rich in contrasts, colors, and surprises.
