Rolling out the yoga mat in the morning is part of the routine for many people. Do they know what tradition they are following? The first yoga sutras are 2500 years old, instructions for a spiritual practice that was adopted by Buddhism and Hinduism. Rediscovered by the Arabs in the Middle Ages, they also inspired Muslims, Christians and Jews to mystical experiences of God. Philosophers such as Schopenhauer saw in the ancient Indian teachings the possibility of pure knowledge, and in the fight against colonial rule it shook the European sense of superiority.
Stefan Weidner tells the story of yoga as the gentle power of the East that has taken hold of the West: a view of the world that transcends borders. He shows that yoga is much more than a path to well-being, and opens a new chapter in world history. Mod.: Catherine Newmark
