Anita G., once a telephone operator and born to Jewish parents in Leipzig in 1937, flees the GDR for the West in the 1960s. After being sentenced to probation for stealing a sweater, she moves to another city, but even there she remains on the run, constantly at odds with a society that does not accept her, and repeatedly fails to start a new life. As a representative for a record company, she falsifies order forms, lives beyond her means and becomes her boss's mistress. For the sake of his wife, however, he dumps Anita one day and reports her to the police. Innocently accused of theft, Anita also loses her next job. She tries in vain to go to university. Her liaison with a married ministerial councillor is also short-lived.

At the Venice Film Festival in 1966, Abschied von gestern was the first German film since 1941 to receive an award and was honored with the Silver Lion.
