Coming-of-age drama

Seventeen-year-old Alike grows up in Brooklyn and tries to find her own identity amid family expectations, friendships, and her first romantic experiences. In the process, she must learn to assert her own voice amid the different worlds of her family and social life.

Director Dee Rees brings this sensitive coming-of-age drama to life with extraordinary realism and intimacy. Rees wrote the screenplay herself; the film is based on her 2007 short film of the same name. *Pariah* marks her feature film debut and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The film is considered an important milestone in queer American independent cinema.

We decided to screen this film because we finally want to bring it to the big screen where it belongs.

With our Best OFF FLINTA series, we aim to create a space at OFF Broadway where FLINTA directors receive special attention. Over the course of three months, we’ll focus on a specific theme, showing you a selected film on the second Monday of every month. On July 13, we’re kicking off with the “Best OFF Coming of Age” block!
