The title may sound playful, but Antonín Dvořák’s*Scherzo capriccioso*surprises its audience with dramatic energy, dance-like verve, and orchestral ingenuity—and will be performed for the first time by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. This is followed by a key work for Principal Conductor Sir Simon Rattle: Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto“In Memory of an Angel,” written after the death of 18-year-old Manon Gropius, the daughter of Alma Mahler and Walter Gropius. Soloist Isabelle Faust will imbue this deeply moving work with the balance of pain, comfort, and remembrance that makes it so unique. Finally, Franz Schubert’s “Great” Symphony in C major, with its epic scope, points far into the future. It represents the pinnacle of the composer’s symphonic output—and serves as the monumental finale of the evening.
