Sir Stephen Hough seems to defy categorization: The British artist is, so to speak, a pianist, composer, writer, and polymath—and a musician of immense curiosity and a passion for unconventional perspectives. This is particularly striking in Sergei Rachmaninoff’s legendary Third Piano Concerto. The highly romantic “Rach 3” is considered one of the most demanding works of its genre and requires the soloist to possess nearly superhuman abilities, which is why it is sometimes also referred to as “Concerto for Elephants”—having the most notes per second in the piano part of any major piano concerto, according to calculations. Combined with the two fiery Stravinsky pieces in the second half of the concert and BRSO Chief Conductor Sir Simon Rattle at the podium, this promises an extremely exciting performance.
