Der Weg des Dalai Lama
In the organizer's words:
Silence. Only the distant echo of prayer bells and the deep murmur of sacred mantras pierce the thin air of the Himalayan valleys. Right in the middle of it all: Manuel Bauer. For over three decades, the Swiss photographer has been capturing one of the most significant figures of our time through his lens—and you’ll be right there with him, with more exclusive access than ever before. Join Manuel Bauer on a spectacular journey through time that goes far beyond the visible. Experience the Dalai Lama’s dramatic escape from Tibet, feel the spiritual energy as he initiates tens of thousands into Buddhism in Mongolia, and stand virtually beside him in Central Park as he speaks about world peace. But the true cinematic experience unfolds in the private moments: Manuel takes you to the Nobel Peace Prize laureate’s retreats and brings complex rituals to life for you through all your senses. At the heart of this documentary is an authentic friendship that even has the Dalai Lama himself raving. Manuel Bauer takes the stage live and shares with you not only visually stunning photographs but also profound messages about inner peace and love for one’s neighbor.
Manuel Bauer (born in 1966 in Zurich) is an internationally renowned Swiss photographer, author, cinematographer, and lecturer in photojournalism. For decades, his work has been dedicated to the major issues of our time: social justice, human rights, and environmental protection. His photo essays are published in leading magazines worldwide and featured in international exhibitions.
He has received numerous awards for his photographic work and his tireless commitment, including an Honorable Mention at the World Press Photo Award and the Picture of the Year Award.
Chronicler of Peace and Flight
Bauer’s documentation of the Tibetan escape routes is unique in the history of photojournalism: he is the only photographer to date who has succeeded in accompanying people on their life-threatening escape from Tibet.
Since 1990, he has also maintained a deep professional and personal relationship with the Dalai Lama. On more than 50 trips around the globe, he has photographically documented the Dalai Lama’s commitment to world peace. From 2018 to 2024, he expanded this work to the realm of film, serving as co-writer and cinematographer on the film “Wisdom of Happiness – A Heart-to-Heart with the Dalai Lama.”
Humanitarian Work and Supporting the Next Generation
Manuel Bauer’s work does not end behind the camera. His commitment to the residents of the village of Sam Dzong in Mustang (Nepal), which is threatened by climate change, led to the construction of a new village for the climate refugees, thereby providing them with a new livelihood.
As the founder of “TruePicture,” a support program for young talents in photojournalism, he passes on his knowledge and values to the next generation. His archive is now managed by the Swiss Photo Foundation.
